# Upcoming change: Android 11 and Android 12 support phase-out: What to expect

Hello Passbolt Community!

Earlier this year we announced the phase-out of [Android 10 support](https://community.passbolt.com/t/upcoming-change-android-10-support-phase-out-what-to-expect/14354). Today we want to share the next step of this plan: in the coming months, the Passbolt Android app will also phase out support for Android 11 (API level 30) and Android 12 / 12L (API levels 31 and 32).

This article explains the policy behind these decisions, who is affected, and the timeline.

# **Why this change**

The reasons are the same as for Android 10: these versions no longer receive security updates from Google.

- Android 11 received its last security patch in February 2024.

- Android 12 and 12L received their last security patches in March 2025.

Since then, any vulnerabilities discovered in these Android versions, including ones that are still unknown today, no longer receive fixes at the operating system level. Continuing to ship Passbolt on them would place responsibility for these platform level security issues on us as the app developer, even though many of them involve low level system components that cannot be reliably fixed from the application layer.

For a password manager, that is a trade-off we are not comfortable making.

On top of the security angle, maintaining compatibility with old Android versions forces us to carry extra code and workarounds for behaviors that Google has since fixed in newer releases. Dropping them frees up time we can invest in improvements for everyone else.

# **The policy behind it**

To make future decisions predictable, Passbolt follows a simple policy:

1. Passbolt supports Android versions that continue to receive security updates from Google.

2. Once Google releases the final security patch for an Android version, that version enters Passbolt’s phase-out process. The change is announced in advance, affected devices begin displaying a warning in the app, and support ends in a subsequent release.

# **Who is affected?**

This change affects devices that cannot be upgraded beyond Android 11 or Android 12 and no longer receive major OS updates from their manufacturer. Most mid-range and flagship devices from that period have already been upgraded to Android 13 or later and are therefore not impacted.

According to recent Google Play Console data, approximately **1.47%** of Passbolt app installs are currently on **Android 11** , while **3.09%** are on **Android 12**. Passbolt acknowledges that with Android 10, the actual figures may slightly be higher, particularly in high-security environments where some users may choose to opt out of data sharing.

# **Maintenance of current app functionality**

As with Android 10, ending support does not immediately disable the Passbolt application on affected devices.

- **Continued Access:** The last installed version of Passbolt compatible with the Android version will remain usable on the device.

- **Server Compatibility:** This version will continue to work with Passbolt servers as long as no breaking changes are introduced on the API or server side.

- **Future Updates:** After the phase-out, the affected devices will no longer receive application updates. The last compatible build may also stop working in the future if any breaking changes are introduced in newer API versions.

# **Next steps and timeline**

When Passbolt announced the Android 10 phase-out, the exact date had not yet been confirmed. The schedule has now been finalized. Release dates may still shift by a few weeks, but the current timeline is:

- **June 2026** - Android 10 phase-out announced

- **September 2026** - Android 10 support ends.

- **October 2026** - Android 11 support ends.

- **November 2026** - Android 12 and 12L support ends.

After this, Android 13 (API level 33) will be the minimum version required to install or update the Passbolt Android app.

# **How to prepare**

- Check your Android version under **Settings → About phone**.

- If a system update is available, install it. Upgrading to Android 13 or newer will keep the Passbolt app supported.

- If your device cannot be upgraded, plan a replacement before the dates above. On your old phone, open **Settings → Accounts → “Transfer account to another device”** and scan the QR codes with your new phone, or simply set up the app again from your browser extension.

This schedule is being shared in advance to give users and administrators time to plan. If your organization has policies, compliance requirements, or other constraints that make this timeline difficult, please share your feedback.
