Hello everyone,
We want to inform you about an issue affecting new users installing Passbolt for the first time with the latest browser extension release. The Passbolt extension v5.5.0 has been available on Chrome since September 15th, 2025, and will roll out on Edge on September 16th, 2025.
When setting up the extension for the first time, some users may encounter a problem during the configuration process of the first administrator.
If you see this error dialog, it means your Passbolt instance was installed in v4 mode. The instance will remain fully functional, but it will not benefit from the latest resource types introduced in recent releases.
Don’t worry, this can be fixed manually from the administration workspace.
- Click “Go to administration.”
- Navigate to “Resource types” > “Encrypted metadata.”
- In the “Supported metadata types” section, check “Enable encrypted metadata (recommended)”.
- In the same section, uncheck “Enable legacy cleartext metadata.”
- In the “Default Metadata Type” section, check “Encrypted metadata (recommended).”
- Click on the “Save” button.
Once these steps are completed, the problem should be resolved and your instance will support the latest resource types as intended.
Our team is already working on a fix, which we expect to release as soon as possible, tentatively tomorrow. We will update this post as soon as the patch becomes available.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
