New release: 5.4.0 & 5.4.1 ~ “It’s My Life” + “Ain’t No Sunshine”

Release Date: August 12, 2025

:notes: It’s My Life (5.4.0)

Passbolt 5.4.0 brings one of our most significant updates yet: encrypted metadata is now stable and widely available.

  • New resource types from day one → icons, multiple URIs, and custom fields are available out-of-the-box for all new instances.

  • Default for new instances → encrypted metadata is enabled automatically.

  • Simple upgrade path for existing instances → admins can enable it with a single click. Migration is manual by design: users can migrate items individually, or admins can roll out an organization-wide update with the new migration tool.

This approach means no disruption to existing workflows or integrations, while giving teams full control over when and how to transition.

Other highlights

  • Secure notes up to 50,000 characters → big enough for full certificate chains, long keys, or detailed internal documentation.

  • Elliptic-curve keys (Curve25519/Ed25519) → default for new users, offering stronger performance and smaller payloads, with security on par with RSA-3072.

  • New language support → Passbolt speaks Czech :czechia:.

:sun_behind_cloud: Ain’t No Sunshine (5.4.1)

Shortly after 5.4.0, we shipped 5.4.1 to address several issues reported in the 5.x series.

Why it matters:

  • It improves overall stability of encrypted metadata and new resource types.

  • It resolves multiple regressions introduced with 5.4.0.

  • It’s the recommended upgrade path for all users.

If you’re not on 5.4.1 yet, update now to ensure you’re running the most stable version of Passbolt 5.x.

:folded_hands: Thank you, community

Nice!! Been waiting for icons and resource types.

Any way to convert a current user RSA-3072 to Curve25519/Ed25519?
