Hello Passbolt Community! We’re planning to phase out support for iOS 16 around the release of iOS 27 in September/October. .
Why this change
Each new iOS release includes platform-level bug fixes and APIs that we build upon directly. Continuing to support iOS 16 requires us to maintain conditional code paths and workarounds for issues Apple has since resolved at the OS level, adding complexity that affects stability and limits what we can deliver to all users.
Who is affected?
The hardware primarily affected by this change includes devices launched in 2017 that cannot upgrade to iOS 17:
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
Based on our recent data from App Store Connect, approximately 0.4% of user sessions currently run on iOS 16. We recognize that some users, particularly those in high-security environments, may opt out of data sharing, so the actual number might be slightly higher.
Maintenance of current app functionality
We want to be clear: Ending support for iOS 16 does not immediately disable the application on these devices.
- Continued Access: You can continue to use the last version of Passbolt that was compatible with iOS 16.
- Server Compatibility: The app will remain functional as long as there are no major changes to our API or server-side communication.
- Future Updates: Once support is officially dropped, these older devices will no longer receive new features, security patches, or bug fixes.
Please note that the last version compatible with iOS 16 might stop working in the future if there are any breaking changes with communication to the Passbolt server.
Next Steps and Timeline
We are announcing this plan now to ensure we hear from users who may be impacted. While the phase-out is not yet scheduled for a specific date, it will take effect in future releases. We are using this time to listen to the community and gauge feedback.
If your organization has specific policies or constraints that make this transition difficult, please let us know and share your thoughts or concerns in this thread.
