Q1. What is the problem that you are trying to solve?
We have some production operations where we install/configure devices that need password(s) to be entered. In some devices the input methods are not friendly for complex/long passwords, so passwords tend to be too simple or short. We have barcode/QR-code scanners integrated in some of the devices, or cameras that can act as one, or we can connect handheld scanners to devices.
Q2 - Who is impacted?
For us this request impacts directly ~10 people who deal with production. For other users the proposed solution can be helpful as well, to allow complex passwords to be used in efficient way where Passbolt or other app does not work or suffice.
Q3 - Why is it important and/or urgent?
For us any steps that speed up production, remove human input errors or improve security (without impacting speed) is very important.
Q4 - What is your proposed solution? (optional)
So the proposal is that there would be a way to show the password and username as a QR code. In practice a small qr code icon next to the eye icon in the password details would bring up QR code image.
- Minimum requirements would be that the QR code image could be resized at least couple different sizes (without blurring).
- Nice to have feature would be to have 1D-barcode option as well (for some 1D-readers). This would require more settings, like what symobology etc.
We have used Keepass with QR code plugin for this in the past. Personally I use it to read QR-coded passwords with barcode-to-text keyboard app in my mobile, directly to any app, from PC screen. Dedicated mobile app reduces the need for this, but there are cases where this comes in handy. Also in some cases using QR code to input passwords might mitigate shoulder surfing, at least a bit.
